National Ichthyosis Awareness Week

October 6 - 13, 2002

The Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types, Inc. proudly announces National Ichthyosis Awareness Week from October 6 - 13, 2002. The Foundation is the only organization in the U.S. dedicated solely to serving the needs of families affected by ichthyosis and related skin types. Awareness campaigns will be taking place throughout many communities across the country during this week to educate and promote an understanding of this genetic skin disease.

Members will be speaking to their local civic organizations, writing and calling the media, hosting get-togethers in their communities, talking to school groups, and organizing fund-raisers. These are just a few of the ways the Foundation’s members will share their stories to help promote an understanding of this very visual disease.

Ichthyosis is a group of genetic skin diseases characterized by very dry, cracked, scaling, and thickened skin. Recent estimates indicate that there are more than 20 varieties of this skin disease, ranging in degrees of severity. The most common form, Ichthyosis Vulgaris, affects over one million people in this country alone. The more rare forms and related skin types, such as Lamellar Ichthyosis, Congenital Ichthyosiform Erythroderma, Epidermolytic Hyperkeratosis, Darier’s Disease and Pitryasis Rubra Pilaris, affect a smaller number of people. Symptoms of these diseases can range from simple dry skin to severe blistering, extensive scaling, itching, heat intolerance, limited mobility, and an increased risk of serious infections.

Formed in 1981, The Foundation serves individuals and families through programs of support, education, research and advocacy. Membership in the Foundation grows continually as a result of these awareness campaigns. Affected families, members of the Dermatology community, and the Foundation’s staff, regularly provide information about ichthyosis to relatives, friends, and the general public. Because of these efforts, many people who may not have an accurate diagnosis or are unfamiliar with the Foundation’s services can find helpful information and support for their skin condition.
